24 Jun Overmedicated and Overwhelmed? Here’s What You Need to Know
Polypharmacy isn’t just a clinical term — it’s something I see every day in real people trying to do the right thing for their health. These are a few stories (names changed) from clients I’ve helped who felt overwhelmed by their medication list:
🔹 Carol’s Story
Age: 74
Issue: Dizziness and a fall
Carol came to me after a fall that resulted in a fractured wrist. She was taking 12 different medications — including three for blood pressure and two for anxiety. When we looked closer, she’d been prescribed one medication to counteract the dizziness caused by another.
No one had taken a step back to look at the big picture.
We worked with her providers to eliminate four medications. Within a few weeks, her energy improved, her blood pressure stabilized — and she stopped having dizzy spells.
🔹 James’ Story
Age: 59
Issue: Fatigue and poor focus
James, living with diabetes and sleep apnea, was exhausted every day. He was taking medications for blood sugar, depression, acid reflux, and sleep — but wasn’t improving.
We discovered one med was causing nighttime confusion, and another was interfering with his CPAP use. A pharmacist also flagged a duplication in his diabetes treatment. After a team meeting with his providers, adjustments were made.
The result? Better mood, improved sleep, and sharper focus at work.
🔹 Maria’s Story
Age: 76
Issue: Medication overload after caregiving
Maria had spent years managing her late husband’s medications. When she developed heart disease, she suddenly had a long list of pills herself. She told me, “I’m not sure what half of these are even for.”
We created a simple chart and looped in her cardiologist and primary care physician (PCP). Several prescriptions were outdated or no longer relevant. We were able to stop five of them safely.
Maria now feels in control and more confident about her care.
The Bottom Line
More prescriptions don’t always mean better care.
Sometimes, the best solution is to ask “Why?” — and gain clarity about what’s essential and what’s not.
